The 2013 Conference will feature a change in venue from the first three AAEEBL Annual Conferences. In 2013, for the first time, we will gather in the heart of Boston at the Hynes Convention Center and Sheraton Hotel. This location offers proximity to many of Boston's attractions and provides a wide array of more options in terms of lodging and dining.
Context for AAEEBL 2013 ePortfolio Conference
AAEEBL is fundamentally about learning, about learning within a new paradigm. AAEEBL is also identified with eportfolios since AAEEBL sees eportfolios as the enabler of this new learning paradigm.
Culturally, within the world of education, we are now experiencing a profound shift from a teacher-centered learning paradigm that emphasizes information delivery and learner receptivity to learning models that acknowledge ever-evolving knowledge structures and innovation. While a traditional classroom structure made sense when knowledge was relatively stable and when the economy was largely a production (industrial) economy, there is a need to rethink ways in which knowledge is both constructed and conveyed to learners. AAEEBL advocates for a learning culture that supports deeper and more adaptable learning.
Since 21st century knowledge is not static, and our economy is increasingly dependent on innovative learners who can adapt to change, individuals must become active participants in their own learning. To succeed in life, they must constantly apply what they've learned to develop novel solutions that address challenges and solve problems. It is essential that they fundamentally understand how to continue their learning and relearning throughout their lives. Therefore it is a requirement today that learners from all entry points - schools and workplaces -- acquire deeper engagement in their own learning as well as a heightened sense of responsibility for their own role as active learners preparing to constructively advance the future.
We need learning paradigms that encourage reflection and connection-making, that lead beyond traditional factual surface-learning to deeper nuances that are relevant and meaningful to individual learners' lives, relationships and careers. AAEEBL's purpose is to advance the movement from information-delivery, teaching-centered practices to learning methodologies that promote personal and social engagement. AAEEBL works to shepherd both classroom and life-long learning transitions and emphasizes greater learner agency. AAEEBL's commitment is to deepen learning and to transform institutions with eportfolios.
ePortfolio Conference Preview
Our 2013 conference will serve as a gathering space for shared collective knowledge about how we, as a scholarly community and as a community of practice, answer questions posed through roughly 10 years of experience. What do we know about eportfolios? What do we know about eportfolio research? What do we know about best practices with eportfolios? What do we know about the integration of technology into teaching and learning? What have we learned about assessment and the role eportfolios play? How do we know what we know about eportfolios? What documentation do we have to validate what we know? Where do we need to go from here with both research and practice to further the implementation of eportfolios in the service of learners? What has eportfolio use taught us about learning?
AAEEBL invites session proposals for The ePortfolio Field Coming of Age: Knowledge, Research and Practice. This three-and-a-half day gathering of the world eportfolio community will feature:
- approximately one hundred concurrent and interactive sessions
- poster sessions
- New for 2013: Ignite Sessions – Present 20 slides timed to be 20 seconds each (20 x 20 design) -- to ignite ideas and spark conversations. (Note: Description change in designation for this format, formerly designated as a “Pecha Kucha” session. For more information about Ignite sessions, see http://igniteshow.com/.)
- a choice of full- and half-day workshops on Monday (all formally invited by AAEEBL)
In addition, thanks to our sponsor, eLumen, we will be hosting our third Executive Summit on Monday afternoon, and we will learn from six plenary speakers, all leaders in the international eportfolio community. The exhibit hall, where we co-locate with Campus Technology, will feature educational technology vendors, many of whom are AAEEBL Corporate Affiliates.
AAEEBL 2013 ePortfolio Conference Tracks
The eportfolio community is a major global learning movement. The use of electronic portfolios, as learning spaces, is roughly in its tenth year and, in honor of this anniversary, the 2013 Annual AAEEBL Conference in Boston highlights the phrase "Coming of Age." Therefore, this CFP invites proposals about using eportfolios to encourage deeper, learner-centered practices. Conference tracks represent a wide array of possibilities for sharing and discussing the full range of eportfolio topics from start-ups to the latest innovations:

- Every session leader, regardless of session format, is expected to register for the conference. Registration for the Annual Conference is not handled through AAEEBL and will open around March 15. (Even though AAEEBL does not handle registration, there is always a way for you to get in touch with AAEEBL if you have questions. Contact information will be posted on the registration page and also on these conference pages here at the AAEEBL site.)
- Names of session leaders, Corporate Affiliate facilitators and session conveners will appear in the 2013 Program. (The program will also include a comprehensive list with logos for all AAEEBL Corporate Affiliates.) We hope that session conveners will join us from both academic institutions and industry.
- By submitting your proposal you are doing so with reasonable assurance for conference organizers that you will be present to lead your session given proposal acceptance. Cancellation policies are established by conference planners (1105 Media), not by AAEEBL.
- Technology available: All session rooms have a video projector, a microphone or microphones, and wireless Internet Access. Important: You must supply your own dongle if you use a Macintosh computer to connect to the VGA cable from the projector. Plan accordingly.
- If you plan to have your session attendees engage in a 50-minute workshop session using wireless, you must specify your plans in your proposal since we will need to add an access point to the room you are assigned to.
- Registration fees for the conference include an early-bird discount applicable to all registrants plus a substantial discount of $200 per person for the first three registrants from AAEEBL member institutions, up to a total discount of $600. (Please note: AAEEBL member benefits differ from AAEEBL Corporate Affiliate opportunities.) Online registration will be available in March, 2013.
- AAEEBL membership is advantageous at conference time, whether it's the annual conference or other AAEEBL conferences. Institutional members receive significant discounts on registration. Savings on conference registrations can either completely cover, or greatly offset the cost of joining and supporting AAEEBL with institutional membership. - All invited 50- and 25-minute session leaders will be asked to provide a 50-word bio for volunteer conveners to use in making session introductions. This request will arrive along with notification of acceptance. It is important to follow instructions for response in that email. Adherence to the deadline is imperative because our volunteer conveners need concise information for introducing you and your session. (Note: Using a Google site or a Google doc may provide an easy option for sharing this needed information. Please do not send URLs for Linked-In resumes or social media sites.) We appreciate your cooperation on behalf of our conveners as we endeavor to save them time and decrease the complexity of their task.
- Important Post-Conference Action Item: All conference session leaders are requested to share with the eportfolio community. Copies of PowerPoint presentations, handouts, URLs, PDFs or other materials will be included on an AAEEBL Annual Conference resource page in order to add to the eportfolio community’s knowledge base. Poster presenters may submit photos of their posters along with documents that include the poster's text if it is not clearly visible in the photo. Prezi and Pecha Kucha presenters are also encouraged to submit presentations. We understand that presenters may not be ready to share their materials two weeks in advance of the Conference, so we invite all presenters to share their materials within a two-week window after the conference by emailing them to firstname.lastname@example.org.
